Cougar Club

Cougar: noun. An older woman, usually in her 40s, who prefers to have sex with much younger men.
It’s pretty popular these days to use Cougar along with MIFL. It’s a relatively new term though. Several years ago, when me and my buddies were in that phase, the term Cougar didn’t exist or at least wasn’t known to us. We called them Lunch Ladies. For a couple of years, my Delta Tau Chi name was “King of the Lunch Ladies.” Enough said.
So when I stumbled across this movie, “Cougar Club“, today it immediately peaked my interest. After performing some due diligence, here is the breakdown:
Love the concept. You can definitely mold a 90 minute sophomoric gross-out comedy around this premise. “A couple of sexually inept younger men are looking to get laid, hook up with some 40 year-old women, get some sex and along the way learn a lot about growing up.” That’s a fairly standard, and often winning, formula. In fact, if they do this well, it will simply be “American Pie” where all the guys hook up with older women - not just Finch - and just change up the jokes. With Stifler’s Mom becoming a household name after “American Pie“, I’m surprised this didn’t happen sooner.
Love the casting. A nice mix of attractive older talent and younger hotties. (I’m guessing the younger girls aren’t fans of the Cougars taking their men. Just a hunch.)
Some Hollywood veterans: Carrie Fisher and Faye Dunaway
A couple of young well-known hotties: Kaley Cuoco and Izabella Scorupco
A few not so well known gorgeous young blondes: Jolane Lentz and Nicole Rayburn
And a plethora of attractive middle aged women to round out the Cougar Club: Isabel Cueva, Katia Louise, Kisha Oglesby, Sharon Morris and Tammy Klein
You gotta like the cast. Lots of upside potential here.
Now the bad news. I’m terrified about the script and execution. Please allow me to explain.
Marketing people are usually quite crafty. They can slice up almost any movie down to a 30 second trailer and make it look funny as hell. Sadly, it often turns out those were the only funny 30 seconds in the entire film. There are trailers on Youtube here , here and here.
That’s a total of 2 minutes of clips. So how do you explain that garbage? That’s the best they’ve got? Really? Yikes. I really wanted to laugh. I did. I was ready to laugh, but nothing. Not once. That’s not good.
Now sometimes these silly comedies sneak up on you when you have low expectations and turn out to be funny as hell. “Deuce Bigelow” and “White Chicks” are a couple examples of films I thought would suck that turned out to be pretty good. We can only hope that is the case with “Cougar Club” and a great premise doesn’t get dropped on the floor and wasted.
It premiers at Cannes on May 19th and has a yet unspecified USA release date. For more info you can check out:
